Physical Education.

Physical Education is an extremely important part of school life at St John’s.  All pupils (from Nursery to Year 6) partake in at least two 45-minute lessons each week.  Key Stage 1 pupils enjoy Gymnastics, Dance and Games; these continue in Key Stage 2 where pupils also study Athletics and Outdoor & Adventurous Activities.

In addition, all pupils (including Nursery) receive swimming and water safety lessons as we proudly boast our own heated pool and specialist teaching resources.  This is made full use of during the Summer term when children swim daily for 3 weeks, as well as taking part in galas and extra fun sessions.

Our swimming pool, being the envy of other local groups, is also made good use of by nearby schools and community groups.

St John’s P.E., both curricular and extra-curricular benefit from very close links with our neighbouring school – Winston Churchill Secondary School; a Specialist Sports College.  Our P.E. Co-coordinator works alongside staff at Winston Churchill and our pupils regularly walk there for festivals and for use of their excellent facilities.  Winston Churchill’s more experienced students enjoy coming back to St. John’s School to help with our clubs.

St John’s Primary boasts an extensive range of extra-curricular activities taken by our dedicated staff as well as specialist sports coaches; even our caretaker is a dab hand with a football!  Football, netball, rugby and cross-country teams train weekly and regularly compete during the winter.

Then in the summer our athletes, rounders, Kwik-cricket and skipping teams, to name but a few, are just as active.

We are very proud to be awarded the Government’s ActiveMark Gold Award.
